A COMPLETE GUIDE ON HOW TO PROBATE AND ADMINISTER AN ESTATE IN BRITISH COLUMBIA

You have been named the executor or administrator of an estate. We first would like to express our condolences for your loss. Losing a friend or family member can be very hard. Being appointed the executor or administrator of an estate can seem like an added burden when dealing with your grief and loss. We wrote this guide especially for you. We know that being an executor or administrator can be challenging, overwhelming, and time-consuming. Before accepting this position, we strongly urge you to read this guide and understand your role and obligations.

Being the executor or administrator of your loved one’s estate can be a great way to honour their memory, but it does come with many legal expectations. There are many deadlines, forms, and processes that must be followed. We strongly urge you to consider if you are able to manage the estate and all the tasks that come with it.

By reading this guide, you will gain a better sense of what it means to be a personal representative of an estate and all the associated rights, duties, and tasks. This guide will walk you through all the steps of being an executor or administrator, from being appointed to distributing the estate. Should you choose to accept this role, this course will guide you through the administration process and can save you hundreds of dollars in legal and
administrative fees. By following this guide, you will administer the estate in compliance with BC laws and regulations.

This guide does not substitute legal advice. If there are complex matters that arise with the estate during any point of the administration, or if you have legal questions that are relevant to the estate, we recommend that you seek legal advice.

We kindly remind you that this course only covers the specific legal matters of estate administration. For all accounting or financial matters, we recommend seeking the advice of an accountant or other professional.
